siirtolapuutarhapelit

Realised: Summer 2009, Warsaw/Helsinki
Title: Siirtolapuutarhapelit / Działkowiec / Allotment Games
Media: game design, illustration & production

Together with Andrew Paterson, Natalia Kulka, Lotta Kauppi and Simo Haanpää we’ve created a game based on the popular tile game Carcassonne. The rules are the same but in our version the cities were replaced with allotment gardens and the fields with suburbs. Different designs were produced and all of them were release under a CC license and available for download here. A sample of my take on the game is presented below.

Pixelache 2009

pa2009_08Completed: March 2009, Helsinki
Title: Pixelache 2009
Media: offset, silkscreen
Client: PixelACHE Festival of Electronic Art and Subcultures

Once again I’ve designed all the materials for the annual electronic art festival in Helsinki. This time the dominating colour was magenta and the leading graphic on the poster was a hair dryer used as a megaphone. I chose ‘Reykjavik Two’ to be the headline typeface of the event from now on. Here are the festival credits: 2009.pixelache.ac/organisers-and-supporters. Click below to see the graphic materials.

TypoTrip - Typography on the Road

typotripthumbStarted: July 2007 (ongoing)
Title: TypoTrip - Typography on the Road ( typotrip.wordpress.com )
Media: digital photography, blog
Client: self-published

Self-made lettering, improvised signs, coincidental designs and random messages; sweet shapes and big words lost in the void of time; also eroded forms, outdated design trends and letters that have seen a better day. Or simply a collection of strange, worn-down, outdated, intriguing, self-made, out-of-place and interesting letters, words and messages from all over the world. A blog dedicated to typography on the road.

Hana Records

hanaCompleted: July 2007, Helsinki
Title: Hana Records
Media: visual identity
Client: Lighthouse Music Ltd.

Logo design for a young record label located in Helsinki. I also managed to convince the founders to use a Finnish word instead of an English one. According to Ilmainen Sanakirja ’hana’ means ”cock, crane, faucet, hammer, spigot, stopcock, tap.” I was also involved in the concepting and design of the cover for the first record released under this label which was designed by illustrator and graphic designer Natalia Kulka. Arkadia promo bags

arkadiabagsCompleted: July 2008
Title: Arkadia promo bags
Media: serigraphy on textile bags
Client: ARKADIA Oy International Bookshop

Assignment that followed the webdesign for the international bookshop. Image of a vintage bicycle with books on the carrier applied by silkscreen on textile bags. Both the client and I don’t like nor use cars but prefer two wheels instead so the image of a bike seemed perfect for the job. Click below to see photos of the bags.

Tuntematon Sotilas

tuntematonCompleted: November 2007
Title: Tuntematon Sotilas
Media: offset print
Client: The Finnish National Theatre

Brochure accompanying the theatre play ’Unknown Soldier’ based on the historical book by Väinö Linna. On the cover there is a list of actors’ names presented in a way associated with military organisation. Above the list is a symbolic instruction of how to tear open holes in the brochure in order to be able to “hide” from the “war” taking place on the stage. Concept of the brochure developed together with director Kristian Smeds, Ville Hyvönen and Aina Bergroth. Photos used in the brochure are by Antti Ahonen.
